Google acquires online wordprocessor

So Google has bought the company behind the Writely Web based wordprocessor and so adds, what will undoubtedly be, the first of several such online ‘office’ applications to its stable.

Don’t rush to try Writely because they are closed to new registrations until the integration with Google is complete. Writely is impressive and gives almost a PC application type experience with some additional bells and whistles. Its ability to publish directly to weblogs and save MS Office format files directly to a local storage device is impressive, but its most powerful feature is that every document automatically has a uniqe URI and so can be worked on collaboratively by all who know the address and have the appropriate login. OK, MS Office can produce a Web page, but certainly not at the speed, or with the ease, that Writely can do it.

The irony is that I hear that Writely was developed in part using Microsoft’s .Net framework which is used for for the development of web services and applications.

Now all Google needs to do is add their GDrive for storage, a Web calendar, a Web spreadsheet etc. What shall we call such a suite … 🙂

It’s getting almost back to mainframe computer days becaue all our ‘stuff’ won’t be in our personal devices. At this rate Google will have it all.
