Some people know of my concerns about the current generation of commercial virtual / managed learning environments and my belief that we should not allow e-learning to be dominated by a few corporate vendors. So the SAKAI project is a welcome open-source focused initiative led by the Universities of Indiana, Stanford, Michigan, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Mellon Foundation has contributed $2.4 million to the project and each of the participating institutions is providing services worth $1.1 million over two years.
