Successful Communities of Practice need to be both structured and fluid at the same time, the difference here is that this structure is defined by its participants rather than by a single instructor with a single learning goal. Although not new, Diana Laurillard's Educause article Rethinking Teaching for the Knowledge Society, still offers us valuable perspectives on the effectiveness of communities of practice in establishing the right conditions for long-term learning to take place. In her article Diana discusses the issue of knowledge acquisition, development and transfer through Communities of Practice within Higher Education, and suggests a number of approaches that can be taken in their facilitation.
