A newsfeed from the BBC reports on the restructuring of UK eUniversities Worldwide (UKeU) and follows on from a statement issued by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). A number of articles in the recent past had started to flag-up possible problems with the UKeU; one report by Donald MacLeod in the Educational Guardian highlighted the low recruitment. The low recruitment when coupled with the large sums of investment will provide considerable ammunition for those who wish to use it. The government has invested 62m and Sun Microsystems has apparently injected a further 5.6m.
Could the situation have been turned around? This will undoubtedly be subject to some debate. However with an election next year I suspect the UK government will be keen to get this potential hot potato out of the public arena and not provide fodder for the other political parties.
