I came across this article in eWeek this morning. It prompted me to have a deeper look into Atom. If you want to know more read on! Atom is another syndication standard. This article by Jason Cook at WebMonkey gives a good overview of why Atom has come about.
Certainly we've come across the issue of how readers handle URIs. (And proxy servers but I'll save that for another article). Perhaps this is something Derek could play around with in his PostNuke explorations?
Do I care? Well, as Jason's webmonkey article points out sometimes it's useful to have some html in your rss to convey meaning and context. Being able to impart context as well as content is important from an educational perpective so if a format can better meet those needs then perhaps it worth a further look. However, bearing in mind both technologies are still pretty much in their infancy there's still plenty of opportunity to hammer out the differences and if, as the eWeek article indicates, the two sides can come together and hammer out a well thought out specification then we all benefit.
Perhaps what is more important is how syndication readers implement the specification, oh, and handle obtaining feeds via a proxy servers.
